What is the difference between 2D, 3D and 4D Ultrasound?
2D Ultrasound is the standard, black and white ultrasound that most medical practitioner’s use to examine your babys anatomy as part of your prenatal care. 2D can be difficult to decipher to the untrained eye. 3D ultrasound is a still image taken in a three dimensional format. This allows you to see your baby, particularly the face in a much more realistic and recognisable image. 4D adds the dimension of movement to 3D images of your baby. You can see your baby in action moving in ‘real time’ during your scan.

What is elective 3D/4D prenatal Ultrasound?

The word elective, describes that this ultrasound is performed at the mothers request. I.e. It is a not for diagnostic medical purposes.
We offer elective 3D/4D prenatal Ultrasounds to provide a positive bonding experience for the mother, father and family members with your unborn baby. Realistic images assist in providing a connection between the parents and baby that can be beneficial to the whole family. The expectant Mum is lucky enough to feel the baby’s movements each day. We find Dad’s particularly love 3D/4D ultrasound as it gives them an opportunity to be more involved by seeing their baby with realistic images.

Do I need a referral for from my Doctor?

No, you do not need a referral from your Doctor as 3D/4D ultrasound is performed at the mothers request and is not for medical/diagnostic purposes. However, you should seek approval from your Doctor as communication with your health care provider is very important.

Does this scan take the place of my Doctor referred Ultrasound’s?

No, it does not. Mothers wanting an elective prenatal Ultrasound with 3D Babies must already be receiving treatment with a healthcare provider for prenatal care and have already undergone a medical, diagnostic ultrasound ordered by their Doctor to confirm their due date, gestational age of the foetus, foetal anomalies and anatomy, and to look for any other pregnancy related issues. Please note: Under no circumstances are scans performed by 3D Babies to be used for diagnostic purposes nor as a substitute for medical diagnostic ultrasound.

Is the 3D/4D scan covered by Medicare or Private Health Care Funds?

No. Since this is an elective procedure you will need to pay for the cost of this ultrasound out of pocket. We accept cash, visa, MasterCard and EFTPOS.

Who will perform my Ultrasound?
All scans are performed by a senior registered diagnostic sonographer with a minimum of 10 years of ultrasound experience. Our sonographers have specialist training in 3D/4D imaging, ensuring we can get the best possible images of your baby.

Is Ultrasound safe? Are there any risks to me, or my baby?

Ultrasound has been routine practice in prenatal care throughout Australia for some time. Extensive studies over 30 years have found that ultrasound has been shown to cause no harm to mother or baby. 3D/4D scanning is exactly the same type and intensity of ultrasound as is used with conventional 2D scanning. 2D/3D and 4D ultrasound both utilize sound waves to look inside the body. A probe placed on to the Mothers tummy emits sound waves into the body, listens for the return echo and advance software generates an image. If you have any questions or concerns about Ultrasound please consult with your Doctor.

I am having twins/multiples. What other information do I need to know?
We recommend appointments for twins/multiples earlier than 27 weeks if possible as we are better able to capture movement and interaction between your babies. Please be aware that image quality of both/all babies is more unpredictable with multiples as one baby can be blocking another. We will do all possible to get the best individual images as well as images of both babies together in the case of twins where possible. We charge an additional charge for each baby beyond one. This includes a number of additional photos in your package. E.g. a standard album includes 6 photos, for multiples, we include 12 in your album. Your DVD will be longer in duration and the number of images on CD’s are greater.

Do you offer after hours appointments?
Yes. All appointments are provided after hours to ensure both parents availability (Evenings between 5pm and 7pm and Saturdays between 9am and 2pm). If you wish to bring along special family or friends, these after hour’s appointments suit most people. We recommend that you schedule your appointment at least 2 weeks in advance, especially if a Saturday appointment is required.

When is the best time to have my 3D/4D Ultrasound?

If you plan on having only one 4D Ultrasound examination, we would recommend having your scan performed between the 27th and 32nd week of the pregnancy as this time period generally provides the most optimal images. Baby’s facial features are well developed and in most cases there is still a good amount of room for baby to move around in. Please use our Best Time Calculator for specific dates for your pregnancy. Please note: If you are expecting twins/multiples the best time for 3D/4D ultrasounds is between 23 and 27 weeks. This allows a greater chance of capturing interaction between the babies.

Can I have a scan before 27 weeks or after 32 weeks?

We have been able to get good images before the 27th week and after the 32nd week, however during these times the success of getting great images is unpredictable. If you choose to book during this time, please be aware of this. Early pregnancy scans (i.e. before 27 weeks) are good for full body images on one screen, however babies face will not look completely formed. Late pregnancy scans (i.e. After 32 weeks) are usually good for facial images however there is limited movement as baby grows, his/her surrounds are less spacious! See our Best Time Calculator.

If my appointment is during 27 to 32 weeks, am I guaranteed to get the ‘perfect’ picture of my baby?

In most cases, Yes, but not always. If baby is persistently looking away from us, or if hands or feet are in the way, it may be difficult to see your babys face. In these situations we will ask the Mother to walk around and offer you a drink which may move or wake up baby. As we allow 30 minutes per appointment, this usually allows time for the baby to be in a number of positions. We cannot guarantee the images will meet your expectations, however we assure you that we will do all that is physically possible to get the best possible images of whatever parts of the baby that can be seen. We are parents also, and we know how important and special this experience is to you.
In extreme cases where baby is not co-operating and we are unable to get any quality images, we will happily reschedule your appointment at no additional cost to you.

Can I bring my family and friends?
Yes. You are very welcome to invite special family and friends to join in your 3D/4D Ultrasound experience. We can comfortably accommodate 3 or 4 people in addition to the Mother. Siblings of any age are welcome as long as a friend or family member is available to tend to them. We want this to be a special moment in your pregnancy with limited distractions.

When can I find out the sex of my baby?
In most cases we can determine the gender of your baby from 18 weeks onwards. In a rare situation we may be unable to determine the babys gender due to their position. In this case, we ask Mum to get up and move around and consequently baby will usually re-position him/herself.

What if I don’t want to know the sex of my baby?
This is no problem at all. Just inform your sonographer and he/she will simply stay away from this area of your baby (our sonographers are well practiced with this request). We will instead focus on babys face, hands, feet etc.

What kind of Ultrasound equipment do you use?
3D Babies use the latest state of the art Philips Medical Systems Equipment. The Philips IU22 is the leading Ultrasound system on the market. Its quality of 3D/4D imaging is second to none.

Is there any preparation needed for my appointment?

What can I do to improve the quality of my ultrasound?
Drinking plenty of water for at least 3 days prior to your appointment is helpful. Hydration can significantly improve the clarity of ultrasound. Eating a snack in the hour prior to your appointment is also helpful.

What happens if my baby is in a hard to see position?
We will offer the Mother a drink and ask her to move around a little. If this does not help and it is still difficult to see baby’s face, we will offer you a complimentary re-scan which will be scheduled at no cost to you. However, please note that every baby scans differently, depending on the gestational age, position, amount of fluid, placental location and mother's body habitus and therefore we cannot guarantee a perfect result as seen in our advertising every time. We will however promise to make every effort to obtain the best possible images of your baby. If after your 2nd scan we cannot obtain what we deem to be satisfactory images, we will refund your money less a $75.00 service fee.

When will our images be ready for collection?
Your package will be ready for collection from X-Ray and Imaging within 48 hours after you scan. I.e. In most cases, within 48 hours, however a Saturday morning appointment will not be available for collection until Tuesday morning. You will be sent an email or SMS message (your choice) as soon as your package is ready for collection. We can express post your package if you wish at an additional cost.

What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment for any reason, we ask that you please give us at least 48 hours notice so someone else is able to utilise this appointment time. 3D Babies reserves the right to charge a $50.00 no show fee for clients who cancel less than 48-hours prior to their appointments. Thank you in advance for your co-operation with this policy.
